More on the Half; the rest of the story

one of the things about running that i enjoy so much is people watching and a race is a great place for that. every shape and size human is there, in running clothes, ready to go the distance. some of those people are far from graceful and move so inefficiently it's reminds me of elaine (from seinfeld) dancing.

everyone is so unique. i notice the bottoms of peoples shoes and the designs and patterns on the soles as they run. also, i notice the way they move their feet when they run in front of me. does one foot swing out while the other one moves fluidly toe to heel? etc, etc, etc. yea, it's dorky.

in my last post i forgot to mention that i pr'd. the last half i ran in march was a rich learning experience (i bonked at mile 6) in which i ran a 2:28. i'm not being sarcastic about the rich learning experience either. here are some of the those things i've learned so far.

i seem to do better with a plan.

barring any unforseen things going wrong, i will run the race i trained for. in other words, i "play like i practice".

working with a coach was very helpful. i didn't have problems doing the work that needs to done and i was in reasonable shape when i started working with her. i needed a little help with focusing my effort staying with the plan.

i must be patient. i have a long range goal of running for as many years as i can and hopefully improving for as many of those years as possible. i would also like to be faster. that won't happen without measured, steady work over time.

tappering and recovering are weird. not running....very strange.

these things may seem obvious. logically i knew them too, but i have an experience of them now i didn't have before.

this is as close to a race report as i get. one more thing however. the sport of running, all the running buddies i have and the runners that i know, all of you at your computers in the blogasphere who love running...i'm inspired by you. you all keep me interested in seeing what's possible next time i pull on my running shoes. that's a beautiful thing.

happy running!

Congrats on your PR Massoman! Nice job! It is funny - all the things we notice when we're out there. I try not to think about what the person behind me is thinking though - that might throw us all off! With every race there seems to be lessons to learn. Again congrats! You've worked hard for this one! (Thanks for you note.)

I especially agree with you on the patience bit. It's too easy to do too much too soon.
