there is a big picture

hi blogmates,
i ran for 57 minutes at an easy pace on the denton rail trail w dianne today. it was about 70 degrees and low humidity. reading about the winter solstice, yule logs and other dark, cold winter traditions makes me think christmas time in texas ain't so bad.
while i was running along one of the random thoughts i remebered was: nothing is ever going to be as good as it used to be. this is both the good news and bad news.
something else i noticed while running along was how disappointed in myself i am that i have been feeling so disappointed in my performance at the white rock half. i just didn't realize how committed i was to running it in two hours or how the the mistakes i made during the race would affect me in such a negative way. it's corny but true: i have learned a more by processing the mistakes and the accompanying feelings from this race than from the successes of other races. one change will be to run for time and intensity, as measured by heart rate and amount of time per workout, not distance and pace. i'm also giving my garmin to dianne and using my reliable timex ironman watch and my hr monitor. there is more i could say about the other changes, but they are not as concrete as giving away garmin so i'll talk about them another time.
try to remember that when all the crazy relatives and family gather for the holidays, you're one of them.
relax. take a breath. there is a big picture.
happy holidays.
have fun running.

We're near Priory Park, which isn't one of the major ones - a small footprint in the landscape.

Running short distances at a quick pace works for me. I find that makes it easier for me to run slightly slower but longer.

You'll get there Richard. You are so close to 2 hours. But I understand what you mean, I'm still beating myself up from my 2:04 half at White Rock 2005. It's also really hard to anticipate what will happen if you haven't run the course before.

I'll restrain my comments about Garmin. Dianne is very lucky. You not so much.

Let's run this week. I need it. My parents will be here on Thursday and I'm sure my mother will be stuffing me like she is preparing me for taxidermy.

That's exactly how I run, Richard. I listen to my heart too. This helps free the mind to focus where needed -- on how the body is accepting a little more push or a certain pace. Amazingly, it also helps me cope with other distractions, like heat or cold or that annoying bathroom feeling.

You'll get under that 2 hour mark for the half. In the meantime, have a happy holiday season as well.

I AM SO SORRY MASSOMAN - I HAVEN'T YET CONGRATULATED YOU ON YOUR PR MARATHON PERFORMANCE!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! The good news: there are more half marathons out there and you will break 2 hours soon. With each race I guarantee you will have learned something, which will help with the next one. The cycle continues over and over. Again, congrats.

i like that you have written about the complexity of running, the expectations and feelings associated with it .... the physical elements are there, but the more I have become aware of these things other things, the more i have found running has to offer in challenge and reward ... on the other hand, without the counter disappoint, there could be no rewards ..... for a very long time, Garmin went of every run .... it started to control what i felt, so eventually i made the decision to run without it and found this change positive .... it's an ongoing process, this running, i hope you find your changes equally stimulating as i have
